New York and Washington October 2011
I went to New York, Washington and Mexico. I have updated the entry on Brooklyn Botanic Garden with a few new photos, (Ckick here for those).
I visited two garden in Washington : National Arboretum and the US Botanic Garden. The Arboretum is very hard to get to without a car and because it is such a huge place, a car is really needed but I managed to see some autumn leaves and the Bonsai collection which is most impressive. Love the expression "in training" for bonsai trees, as though they were athletes. Oddly enough, the Japanese collection was the least impressive. I thought the best was the Chinese section. In the North American section and I particularly liked the dwarf juniper tree.

National Garden
National Garden (U S Botanic Garden) is on a rather cramped site near the Capitol Building. The staff were preparing an exhibition so much of it was closed but some interesting orchids in the conservatory and I liked the Pink Quill bromeliad.

Gertrude Stein exhibtion
I expected to enjoy the exhibition about Gertrude Stein at the National Portrait Gallery because I was (please note past tense) so keen on her during my university days. This is a really impressive exhibition which I enjoyed. Of special note are the (1) small gouache by Picasso of Alice B Toklas and (2) Gertrude’s friendship with the haute couture designer Pierre Balmain surprised me. He designed a brown velvet suit for her which is striking. Photos of these can be seen on the exhibition website :

In the contemporary section of the exhibition there is a most unusual installation. The famous image of Gertrude Stein by Picasso is recreated with spools of thread. [Yes .. I know, it does sound strange .. it is]. There is a photo of it on the artist’s website, (Devorah Sperber:
