New York Botanical Garden
From Grand Central Station to New York Botanical Gardens, 20 minutes out on the Metro railway line. Founded in 1891, it’s a huge place (250 acres) and the 50 acre forest of native trees at the centre of the gardens is lovely. A wild stream cuts through a deep ravine near the edge of the forest ; it is almost impossible to believe that the skyscrapers of Manhattan are only 20 minutes away. The Rock Garden was a surprise ; this one is very large and has more than the usual alpines. It is located in a hilly setting on the edge of the forest and the rocks seemed natural rather than 'selected'.
Roses were past their best, but the Perennial Garden near the Conservatory was in fine shape. The Conservatory did not seem that special, but I was somewhat jaded at this point.
