Kuala Lumpur Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve
Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is right in the heart of Malaysia's capital. Perhaps I was expecting too much from the description on the Internet .. acres of virgin jungle. Yes, that's true, but surrounded on each side by overdeveloped city and the noise of traffic. I liked the well signed paths explaining the names and usage of trees. How odd that a slim narrow tree would be the best hardwood for furniture and a huge tree that I would not be able to get my arms around would be destined to make chopsticks and pencils.
The paths lead to the top of the hill and KL Tower (their telecoms tower with restaurant and viewing platform) which is a mess .. 'cultural events' clashed with high volume speakers blasting out 'If I had a hammer'. Tourist touts galore .. I made a quick exit.
Bukti Nanas .. another go
Just exploring in the area near my hotel (Ancasa at Pudaraya Bus Station) and found an entrance to Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, just across from St Andrews Church. This took me up the part of the forest I did not see on my first visit. I would have enjoyed this swinging bridge a lot more if it were much higher .... it was so close to the gorund that there was no sense of excitement or of seeing the forest at a different level. There were several good paths, an area with bamboo and as before, lovely trees. But the same problem ; not really sheltered from noise of traffic (and an auto alarm) and the buildings were often visible. Still, a nice change from the rest of the city because there are no bustling crowds there.
