Semengoggh Wildlife Centre

Semengoggh Wildlife Centre is well known for its Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Orang utons which have been injured or abandoned are kept in a large forest reserve. Large crowds (100 or more when I was there) come in hopes of seeing them during two feeding times per day. The knowledgeable Australian couple staying at my hotel advised that while I was unlikely to see any animals (they are not in cages and may just eat the fruit in nearby trebus and in the nearby trees. A public bus from Kuching centre took just 45 minutes and went right to the ticket booth of the wildlife centre.

There are several wooded areas in the centre (palms, bamboo, indigenous trees) which I really enjoyed. I seemed to be the only one there because most people took transport right to the feeding area (a 20 minute walk from the entrance). In  spite of being careful (I’d been warned by the Australians) , I fell on a slippery walk and bruised my ankle. The concrete walks are covered by a layer of moss which is dangerous when wet.

The sad thing is that the orang utans (reason for visit) were on strike or something .. they did not come to the afternoon feeding session. Luckily, the gardens are lovely .. the jungle there is so dense it is hard to photograph.
