Kuching : Reservoir Gardens

Reservoir Gardens is just a large park set among hills with a lake at its centre, well landscaped and with good walks throughout the park. Two large stones at the lakeside are painted and carved, but on a subsequent visit I realised that there were other stone sculptures in the park. One resembled a face, but sometimes there are only wavy lines along one side of a rock. This led to a hunt through the park that became a little like an Easter Egg Hunt .. finding the carved stones (many are uncarved). Naturally I began to see carvings when none existed .. very attractive and slightly whimsical sculpture

On a return visit to photograph the rocks I was surprised to see the place teeming with people. They were holding a fishing contest and the shores of the lake were stacked out by groups of people fishing. There were both Chinese and Malays, with a substantial number of women fishing. The only problem was the music - Hotel California by the Eagles did not seem to match the location or occasion and the fact that it was at such a high volume that the sound was distorting made it particularly unpleasant.

I was lucky to be there for the big catch .. one man caught a 9 kg fish - so large that it warranted a motorbike delivery to the weighing station ; all fish were weighed and put in a tank and would be released back into the lake. Great excitement .. and I must admit that a 9 kg fish (nearly 20 pounds) is impressive!
