Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
The garden was established in 1670 and is very close to the city centre (frequent bus services to the East Gate on Inverleith Road. The 70 acre site has several hills which means it looks quite large because there are are secluded areas and it seems filled with surprises.
" APRIL IS THE CRUELLEST MONTH "
April proved to be just a bit too early in the year for a site this far north so I did not see the garden at its best. Having said that, I enjoyed it immensely. The stark trees took on a sculptural quality and some areas of the gardens (the Alpine section and the Chinese Garden) seemed less affected by the winter.
The Chinese Garden is a bit of an oddity (certainly when compared to those in Seattle or Vancouver). This is not, strictly sp4eaking, decorative. It emphasises with a very practical streak. medicinal plants and
There is a new restaurant/visitor centre at the John Hope Gate, a very impressive structure. The Garden’s website praises the building but does not give credit to its designers, John Cullinan Architects , so I will. I look forward to a visit in the future during warmer weather when the plants are in full bloom and all the trees have leaves. An dif i win the lottery, I might even spring for a lunch at the posh restaurant.
