Arcata California
Arcata was not a destination as such but rather a place to pause after my bus journey down from Portland. I stayed at the old (1912?) Arcata Hotel which is right on the town plaza. The town has a university with a lively student population and also seems to be the headquarters for a roaming group of modern-day hippies. Lots of long hair, marijuana smoking and the appearance of having 'dropped out'. I enjoyed the bars, especially Humboldt Brews which has a large range of real ale and an interesting mix of students and locals.
The most delightful part of the visit was my trip to Arcata Redwood Park. This is a redwood forest right on the edge of town (approximately 1 mile walk from the plaza). My first impression was that it looked a bit tame (kid's playground and picnic areas) but once on a hiking trail, the town seems miles away and I was in a beautiful forest.
